Palatal Expander

A palatal expander is an orthodontic appliance used to widen the
upper jaw (maxilla). In growing children, the upper jaw is made up of
two halves connected by a growth site called the midpalatal suture. By
gradually activating the expander, the upper jaw can be widened over
time, creating additional space for developing teeth and improving the
relationship between the upper and lower jaws.

Palatal expansion is commonly used to correct crossbites, address
dental crowding, and support healthy facial development. Because the
roof of the mouth forms the floor of the nose, widening the upper jaw
also increases the width of the nasal cavity. This may promote
improved nasal breathing and is one reason palatal expansion is often
considered as part of a comprehensive airway-focused treatment
approach.

Once the desired expansion has been achieved, the appliance
remains in place for several months. This retention period allows new
bone to form and stabilize the expansion, helping maintain the results
long term.
